Everton Football Club

Everton Football Club (also known as The Toffees) is a professional English football club based in Liverpool and played in the highest division of English football - the Premier League. Everton Football Club was founded in 1878 as St. Domingo FC so that the people from the parish of St Domingo's Church could participate in a sport outside of the summer months. The team began playing on Stanley Park with no dressing rooms, carrying their own goalposts out onto the pitch. The club was renamed Everton a year later When people outside of the parish wanted to participate. Everton's home matches are held at the Goodison Park stadium in Liverpool since its completion in 1892. The club has played in the top division since 1954 and was among the founding members of the Premier league in 1992. How to get to Liverpool

By air

There are a few options for flying to an Everton match in Liverpool. The nearest airport to Goodison is Liverpool John Lennon airport, around 11 miles from the ground. The airport is served by budget airlines Easyjet and Ryanair amongst others.

From the airport, take bus numbers 80A or 86A to Liverpool South Parkway bus/rail interchange, then the Northern line to Kirkdale or Sandhills station (see rail travel above). Alternatively, if you’re short of time, taxis are readily available at the airport.

By Train
If you’re coming into Liverpool by train, you will arrive at the city's main railway station ,Liverpool Lime Street which is just over two and a half miles from the stadium. From there catch any of the buses, numbers 19/19A, 20, 21, 311, 345, 350/351 that run from Queens Square, opposite the main entrance to the station.

Kirkdale is the nearest station, approximately 1 mile or 10 minutes on foot from the ground. You have the choice of either following the crowds up to the ground or striding ahead and taking the lead, in which case, here’s some directions that might help. On leaving the station, turn right and cross over the railway bridge, walking up Westminster Road. Take the third road on your left, (Goodall Street) until it becomes Harlech Street, and you reach the main (A59) County Road which has plenty of pubs and places to eat. Depending upon which of the residential roads opposite you take, the ground is on your right when you reach Goodison Road.

An alternative is to stay on the Northern Line as far as Sandhills station and catch the Soccerbus service, which links the station with Goodison Park for all league and cup matches. On match days, it operates from two hours before kick off up until 15 minutes before and for 50 minutes after the final whistle (subject to availability). If you plan ahead, you can ask for a ticket to Goodison Park when you buy your rail ticket and you get a return on the Soccerbus for an extra £1. If you choose to pay when you board the bus, it’ll set you back £1.50 single or return but it’s free to people who hold Merseytravel passes.

By Bus

If you’re travelling into the city by bus, the National Express coach station is located on Norton Street just off London Road. A short walk will take you past Lime Street station to Queens Square bus station. Several bus services operate from the city centre past Goodison stopping either on County Road or Walton Lane.

Queens Square is the main bus station with loads of stands. To get to the ground you can catch bus numbers 19/19A, 20, 21, 311, 345, 350/351 from stands 8 or 12. The journey takes around 20 minutes.

Directions to Goodison Park

public transport
Goodison Park is located about 4km north of Liverpool’s city center. It is right across the street from Liverpool’s Anfield stadium. Both stadiums are well serviced by local buses. Line 26 (from Paradise St. bus station) or 17B, 17C, 17D & 217 (from Queen Square bus station) stop directly to the ground. Line 68 & 168 (between Bootle and Aigburth) or line 14 (from Queen Square) & 19 stop a short walk away. More travel information to Everton games.

By car
From the North & South: From the M6, exit at junction 26 onto the M58 and continue until the end. At Switch Island take the turning to your left to join the M57 Junction 7. Exit the M57 at Junction 4 to turn right into East Lancashire Road (A580). Follow the road, across Queen's Drive, into Walton Lane. Goodison Road is less than a mile along, on the right.

Alternatively, on leaving the M58, take the second exit off Switch Island past the Asda supermarket on the A59 Ormskirk Road. If you travel along here, past some retail parks and Aintree Racecourse, eventually, after passing Walton Hospital you reach a particularly unpleasant-looking roundabout. Go straight ahead, under the flyover, past Walton Church and along County Road. Goodison is on your left just after you pass KFC and Subway.

From the East: From the M62, exit at Junction 6 onto the M57, to Junction 4 and then follow directions as above. Alternatively, stay on the M57 until the end of the motorway and then take the first left onto the A59 Ormskirk Road following directions as above.

From Wirral & the West: From the M53, continue to Wallasey and follow Liverpool via the Kingsway Mersey Tunnel (£1.30 toll each way – advisable to have correct change as the staffed booths can attract long queues). Turn left at the end, following signs for Bootle following Scotland Road, taking the right fork to the A59 Kirkdale Road. Follow the road round for two miles and Goodison will appear in front of you.

Alternatively, take the A41 to Birkenhead and use the Queensway Tunnel (£1.30 toll) to Liverpool. At the roundabout, take the first exit signposted A59 North and continue straight along Scotland Road. Continue on the A59, ignoring the first fork to your left, but taking the second fork on the lower road past the 5-a-side pitches which will take you past Iceland, Blockbuster Video and Aldi. Goodison Park is on your right after the traffic lights.

There are plenty of car parks springing up all the time. Stanley Park car park, approximately half-a-mile from Goodison is always popular, as it has the largest capacity, accessible from Priory Road, costing £6. There are additional car parks on Utting Avenue or if you turn off County Road onto Salop Street, between the Aldi/Iceland/Blockbuster site and McDonalds. Several of the industrial units and the social club here offer parking for around £5 a car, though as there are so many car parks in the area, it can take a good 20 minutes to get back on to County Road.

If you are travelling by car, aim to get up to the ground at least two hours before kick off to make sure that you have somewhere to park without the risk of being towed. On a Bank Holiday, you can sometimes get away with using the Aldi car park without having to pay, but on Saturdays and match nights they tend to have security at the entrance. You can still expect to hear the usual ‘can I mind ya car for ya mate’ if you park in any residential area that isn’t a designated car park.

Eating and drinking

Drinking-wise, the closest pub to the ground is the Winslow opposite the Main Stand which gets uncomfortably busy in the run up to kick off. Further up Goodison Road, past St. Lukes Church is The Spellow pub which is ok for a beer. Within a couple of minutes walk from the ground there are at least twelve pubs which are all really friendly and generally welcome home and away supporters. A large Wetherspoons has recently opened on Walton Road, The Sir Thomas Frost. It is open from 9am daily and gets fairly busy on a match day despite its size. The County, The Harlech Castle, The Queens Arms, The Glebe and the Black Horse are just a few of the watering holes dotted along Walton Lane/County Road and whilst they mightn’t look the best from the outside they all are welcoming and serve decent pints.

The only pub by the ground not recommended for away fans is the Royal Oak on the corner of Spellow Lane and Walton Road but most of the other pubs are fairly away-fan-friendly.

If you’re walking up from Kirkdale train station, you can stop at one of the pubs on the way including the Melrose Abbey or The Peacock on Westminster Road. Carisbrooke Road and Barlow Lane both run from the Spellow Lane/County Road junction and have one or two nice pubs popular with Evertonians but which also welcome away fans.
