Arsenal Football Club (also known The Gunners) is a professional English football club from the northern part of London, England. Arsenal was formed in 1886 by a group of workers at the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory. At first it called Dial Square, but in 1891 the club changed its name to Woolwich Arsenal after the club turned profesional in 1891. In 1931 the prefix was dropped completely after they move to Highbury. Arsenal is rightfully considered as one of most successful football clubs in the English Premier League sice it has won more than a dozen Premier League titles as well as winning the FA CUP for 10 times. Their Barclaycard Premiership title in 2003/04 saw them become only the second team to win the league without being beaten, not even once. This made them earning the title as "The Invincibles." How to get to North London
By air
London is an international transportation hub. Flights from all parts of the globe arrive and depart daily from the city’s four airports.
Heathrow Airport (airport code LHR) – Located approximately 30 km from Emirates Stadium. Trains and buses run frequently from the center of London to Heathrow.
Gatwick Airport (airport code LGW) – Located approximately 50 km from Emirates Stadium, Gatwick is London’s second biggest airport.
Standsted Airport (airport code STN) – Situated 54 km from Emirates Stadium, Standsted is where you will arrive if you fly on one of Europe’s discount airlines like Ryanair and easyJet. It services airlines from throughout Europe.
Luton Airport (airport code LTN) – Luton is located 47 km from Emirates Stadium. It is another arrival and jumping off point for low-cost flights to Europe and throughout the UK.
By Train
The only high speed international train service between mainland Europe and London is Eurostar. These trains all terminate at Waterloo station in central London. From there it is an easy Tube (Subway) ride to tube stops near the Emirates Stadium.
The VERY nearest station is Drayton Park, which is about 150 metres from the ground. The station is closed on weekends and on matchdays so the only use it will be to you is on non-matchdays if you’re going to pick up match tickets or do the stadium tour.
The next nearest tube stations are Holloway Road and Arsenal, which are on the Piccadilly line (dark blue on the London Underground map). Both of these are around a 3/4 minute walk from the stadium.
The other stations serving Ashburton Grove are Finsbury Park, roughly ten minutes walk away, which is served by both the Victoria (light blue line on the London Underground map) and Piccadilly lines, and suburban rail services; and Highbury & Islington, also approximately ten minutes away, which is served by the Victoria Line and the North London Line. Both these stations are in Zone 2.
The queues for the Underground and trains at Arsenal, Highbury & Islington and Finsbury Park after games can be fierce. Expect to wait a minimum of 30 minutes and up to an hour in extreme cases if the services aren’t running well to get on a train. If you’ve got time, we’d recommend going for something to eat or a pint and let the crowds disappear.
By Bus
Be warned. A lot of bus services in central London now require you to buy a ticket or pass BEFORE you get on the bus. A single journey ticket, whether purchased before you get on the bus or from the driver costs £2. The cost of a single journey paying with an Oyster card costs £1. Ticket inspections on all forms of public transport have been stepped up recently. This means there’s a far bigger chance you’ll be caught out. If you are you’ll be charged a special penalty fare of £20.
Emirates Stadium Map
Directions to Emirates Stadium
Public transport The stadium is located in the London borough of Islington in the north of London, about 7.5 km from the center of the city. The best way to get to the stadium is to take the Tube (Subway). Tube stops that are near Emirates Stadium include: Arsenal Station (Picadilly Line), Finsbury Park (Victoria & Picadilly lines) or Highbury & Islington (Victoria Line, North London Line and Great Northern Line).
By Car
In a word, don’t. There is a 1.5 mile matchday parking exclusion zone around the ground which is RIGIDLY enforced by Islington Council parking enforcement officers.
If you really must drive then park north of Islington at either Cockfosters, Oakwood or Arnos Grove stations, all on the Piccadilly line and take the Tube into Arsenal station.
Islington isn’t in the Central London Congestion Charging zone and you can quite easily avoid the Zone if you’re driving from the south or west. The problem will however be parking. If you can find it, it will cost an arm and a leg.
Eating and drinking
The traditional pub for away supporters at Highbury was The Drayton Arms. Arsenal have been most convenient, moving their new stadium right next to it! The pub remains away friendly, and is usually absolutely chocker on a matchday with fans spilling out onto the streets around it. There's usually a couple of burger vans there, too, to keep the blood-sugar levels up.
With most fans arriving by tube, a lot take the option to drink further away from the ground (adjacent to a Victoria line or Piccadilly line stop) and arrive later at the ground rather than on the pubs around the Holloway Road area, which are largely home supporter dominated.
Another option is to drink around Finsbury Park tube, to the north of the ground, where The Blackstock and The Twelve Pins (both easy to find as soon as you come out of Finsbury Park tube station) are both welcoming of away supporters, and are not much more than a 10 minute stroll away from the ground.
